Prologue
Eddy looked out the window. The Winter rain was splashing against the window and the clouds blocked the suns light. Eddy hated Winter, no sun meant kids didn’t go out as often, and that meant he couldn’t do scams. He sat in the back with shopping bags surrounding him. Eddy was now 14. The clothes he wore were the same as usual but a fourth hair had grown on his head. His dad was in the front passenger seat deeply snoring as he slept. His mum was driving, occasionally yawning as she did so. He glanced at his watch, it was getting on for eight. Then he looked at the speedometer, they were going fast, but not fast enough for Eddy. He leant over to his mum;
“Would you hurry up! It’s a freeway for Christ sake!”
“Eddy, I’m going five miles over the limit, and that is no way to speak to your mother!”
Eddy slumped back into his seat. It had been a bad day. Two hours of shopping, a bird pooped on his shirt leaving a dirty stain on his clothes, not to mention the lorry that splashed him- the wetness of his trousers was making him very uncomfortable. Come to think of it, yesterday hadn’t been too great after. He sat with his arms crossed and a stern expression on his face, then he remembered what Double-D had said once: “Three’s the charm!” Tomorrow he’d be with his two friends and everything would be fine. Eddy’s expression changed to a faint smile. His dad woke up, yawned then looked at his watch.
“Hmm … I guess tomorrow will be better.”
“That the spirit Eddy.” said his dad.
His mum smiled. Eddy looked into one of the shopping bags and picked out a magazine. ‘Babes Weekly’ read the cover. Eddy opened the pages to let a fold out unravel. He looked at it at different angles. He flicked through the pages.
It was nearly eight thirty, Eddy was still looking at the magazine and his dad had dozed off again. Eddy lowered the magazine so he could look over the top. They were still on the motor way. A sign whizzed past. Eddy could jus make out what it said: Peach Creek 1 1/2 miles. Just ahead there was a intersection. The car slowed to 80 mph. Suddenly a lorry pulled out going way over the speed limit. Eddy’s mum hammered the brake down with her foot, but they couldn’t stop in time. The oncoming lorry pelted into the side, mangling the driver’s side. The car flipped several times. Eddy screamed in horror along with his dad. His mum was not making a sound. It smashed into another car. Both hurtled off the road. Eddy screamed one last time before the car smashed into a tree. Every thing went black…
1
A light flashed in his eyes, it was a bright light. Eddy’s eyes opened into slits. The light was still there. His eyes opened fully. The bright light was actually a light bulb in he what he soon realized was a hospital. Eddy blinked several times. He lifted his head. It was painful, his muscles ached. Eddy clenched his teeth as he slowly raised himself up. His vision was blurred, but he could just make out a nurse. He turned his head there was a figure. As his sight got clearer and clearer, he could recognize who it was.
“Dr Freeman?” enquired Eddy. Dr Freeman was once Eddy’s family doctor, but two years ago he’d moved to Peach Creek General.
“What happened?” Eddy’s voice was very weak, weary and hard to make out.
“I am so sorry Eddy.” said Dr Freeman softly.
“Why doc? What happened?”
“You were in a horrendous accident which, I’m sad to say…” He paused.
“What doc? TELL ME WHAT HAPPENED DOC!” His voice became a shrill yell.
“Eddy, your parents have unfortunately passed away.”
Eddy burst out in tears. Dr Freeman handed him a box of tissues. Eddy blew his nose and wiped his eyes, but that didn’t help. “D-d-did they suffer?”.
“No, they both died almost instantly.”
Eddy wiped his eyes again. “Well that gives me some sort of relief, at least they died quickly.” He blew his nose again.
“Now Eddy, you’ve been in a coma for two weeks, and I’m afraid you can’t live on your own in your old house anymore, so I have decided to foster you for the time being, until we find another candidate. But for now I want to give you another few months for your muscles to get back to their normal strength.”
“Thanks doc.” Eddy sniffled up some snot and wiped his eyes for a third time .
“Well for now, you must rest.”
Eddy laid back onto his bed, as the doctor walked off. His eyes slowly closed.
A faint sound echoed Eddy’s skull, It was a funny voice, dim-witted and slow.
“Eddy, oh Eddy.” He then heard another voice. This voice was less deep and more educated than the last.
“Eddy? Wake up Eddy.” said the other voice softly.
Eddy’s eyes started to open, he could make out two figures. One was tall and the other was only slightly smaller. It was Ed and Double-D. Ed- who was now fifteen- hadn’t changed much in personality, but his jacket was now black and so were the stripes on his t-shirt and his jeans were black denim. Ed had become a rocker but still had the slow, dim-witted and lovable personality he had always had. In his hand was a box with the very long brand name ‘Fudge Barbers from Planet Trim’ printed on the sides. Then there was Double-D, who hadn’t changed a bit except for a set of braces in his mouth. Double-D also had a box of chocolates. The cover read; “Triple Cream Chocolate Heaven.”
“Hey Eddy!” Called Ed as he gave him a hug, then handed the gift he had brought. “You know, that is the official chocolate from the movie, ‘Mega Death Barbers from the Evil Planet Trim II: the Attack of the Violent Robots!”
Eddy hadn’t a clue what Ed was on about but replied with a polite smile. “Thanks Ed,”
Double-D also gave Eddy a hug. “Eddy, it’ so good to see you awake, Ed and I have come here every day we could.” he hugged Eddy again, then gave him his gift. “They are some of the finest chocolates around, mother suggested them, they are quite expensive but quite delectable.”
“Okay… well thanks!” thanked Eddy.
“Oh yes, if you look to your right you’ll see the other confectionary treats Ed and I have given to you.” pointed out Double-D.
Eddy looked to his left. It was true. There was a small pile of chocolate and sweets, from “Ice Cream Sundae Chocolate Bars” to “Jelly Children.”
“So anything change when I’ve been away from the cul-de-sac?”
“Nothing in the cul-de-sac has changed much, except I have a boil on my buttocks!” ranted Ed.
“Charming Ed,” said Double-D “by the way Eddy, I was so horrified to hear your parents passing, they were lovely people. I offer my deepest regrets.”
A tear rolled down Eddy’s face.
“Oh cheer up bucko! you’ve still got us.” Ed comforted. Eddy wiped his eye.
“Yes Eddy, Ed is right, together I’m sure we will pull through.” Double-D added.
“I guess so.” replied Eddy.
“That’s the spirit Eddy. Well, we’d better get going, bye Eddy.” said Double-D.
“See ya later Eddy!”
As soon as they left he fell to sleep.
2
Two months had been and gone and Eddy had come out the hospital the day before. Him and doctor Freeman (mostly the doctor though.) had started to unpack his things into his new room. Doctor Freeman’s house was quite large and consisted of; two bathrooms both with similar tiles and baths, a spacious living room which had a large dining table in the middle surrounded by cabinets, a hallway, a roomy kitchen, a game room (with pool table and wide screen telly amongst other things), a bedroom (for doctor Freeman) and a guest room in which Eddy would stay. It was just him and doctor Freeman, unfortunately the poor man’s wife had died of a stroke just a year ago. Eddy could remember the exact day it happened. Double-D had taken a large bunch of flowers in a weaved basket and a box of fancy truffles. Ed on the other hand had brought him a large bag of jelly babies and a card with sorry written on the front. Eddy pondered hard what had he got the doctor, did he get anything for him? A small feeling of guilt rushed round in his mind, as doctor Freeman looked around the door.
“Were do you want your record player?” he asked.
“Umm… I don’t know,” said Eddy as he got of the sofa “I’ll come help.” It was the least he could do since the feeling of guilt was stabbing into his mind.
Double-D sat on a small stool observing his ants. He was feeling down since one of the ants had killed some of the others, he did what he had to do, he killed the offender. His ant population was down by twenty and he was down in the dumps. A loud knock on the door changed his mood, he got up and ran down the stairs as fast as he could. He opened the door to reveal a more than happy face of Ed.
“Why hello Ed, what a splendid day. Shall we call for Eddy?” enquired Double-D.
“Does a bear poop in the snow?” replied Ed with his usual stupid tone.
“Its woods not snow Ed,” corrected Double-D, “Anyway, we should see Eddy now.” and with that the two Eds ran to Eddy’s new house, Double-D was in front and Ed was following. As they ran they saw their worst enemy; Kevin. He stopped his bike in front of the duo stopping them in their tracks.
“Hey dorks is your dumb ass friend out of the hospital yet?” insulted Kevin
Double gave him a stern look and crossed his arms, “you listen here you juvenile imbecile!” Barked Double-D sternly “you cant talk about our friend Eddy in that manner!” Ed was behind Double-D nodding his head.
“He is right mister!” said Ed “You are naughty!” He said the last word with an extended y making it sound like naughtaayy.
“What you going to do about dorks?” disrespected Kevin.
“This is what I’ll do.” said Double-D. Now as you know Double-D is quite wimpy, but he wasn’t about to let anyone talk about any of his friends like they were trash. He picked up a stone and lobbed it at Kevin’s bike. It hit the wheel damaging one of the spokes badly.
“You complete and utter arsehole!” yelled Kevin, inspecting the damage. “That’s going to cost a bunch in repairs.
“Serves you right!” said Double-D smugly.
Ed was behind him yelling and hooting. “Go Double-D”
“I’ll show you!” Threatened Kevin as he walked towards Double-D
“Oh, dear. I’m sorry Kevin.” Whimpered Double-D.
Kevin thumped Double-D in the face, hard. Double-Double-D fell down with blood pouring out his nose. Ed’s expression warned Kevin. Kevin backed away. Now Ed is generous and friendly guy, but he was not about to let Kevin get away with hurting his friend. He grabbed Kevin round the collar turned him around and brought his fist back to deliver a powerful punch.
Eddy put Double-D’s number in the telephone again. *ring* *ring* *ring*.
“Hello this is Double-D speaking.”
“Hey Double-D what’s u…”
What he thought was Double-D interrupted “I am unable to answer the phone at the moment,” it was the blasted answer phone he had answered to last time he called. “To leave a mess… ED! Get away way from there.” A crash could be heard in the background, “Ed, now look what you’ve d…” The speech was stopped by a loud beep.
“Um… Double-D? this is Eddy again, I just want to know why you didn’t call for me today?” Eddy finished his message and miserably put the phone down the receiver. He turned and headed back to his case to unpack the last things for his room. He reached down and carefully removed his lava lamp and placed it on his bedside cabinet. He admired his distorted reflection on the lava lamp and turned to his room. It was around the same size as his old room so everything had fitted in nicely. The wallpaper was a Light blue and the carpet was a darker shade. Several cobwebs were in the corner and dust filled the room. It had been doctor Freeman’s old son’s room, that was until he moved out of course. Eddy threw himself onto the bed and sighed.
“They were meant to be here a hour ago,” he muttered to himself. He felt a small vibration in his pocket followed by the A-team’s Theme tune. His mobile! Without haste he pulled it out of his trousers and brought it to his ear.
“Hello this is the Eddy, everyone’s favourite guy!” said Eddy, a stupid tone of voice came from the other end.
“HI EDDY!” Boomed the voice down the phone.
“Ed? Is that you?” Enquired Eddy.
“Sure is Eddy!”
“Were are you? Is Double-D with you?”
“The police station,”
Eddy’s voice gained a slightly angry tone, “what the hell are you dong there!” Eddy was getting inpatient.
“I punched Kevin.” said Ed with a slight guilt in his voice.
Eddy’s expression changed again, this time into a sinister smile, “awesome Ed! What for?”
“He was insulting you behind your back and he punched Double-D!” replied Ed, “he was being a jerk with a capital q!”
“So… your in jail?”
“Nah! They let me off with a warning!”
“That’s a relief, can I speak to Double-Double-D?”
“No can do mister, Double-D is at the hospital.”
“I guess Kevin hit him hard, I better go see him tomorrow.”
“I shall come with Eddy.”
“Okay, meet me in front of my house at ten tomorrow morning, and don’t be late!”
“I shall not chum, see you tomorrow.”
“Okay Ed see ya’ later.”
Eddy put the phone down and looked at his alarm clock. It was only five in the afternoon but yet he felt so sleepy from unpacking. His eyes fell slowly lowered into slits and before he knew it he had fallen asleep.
3
Eddy looked around, he was in his old house. It was just like it used to be, everything was there. The fridge, his bed, everything. But this was surely impossible. Everything had been taken out ages ago. Everything was silent… all was still. There was an eerie presence in the house, something Eddy couldn’t put his finger on.
“Hey…” Eddy hesitated to continue, “…what the hell is going on?”
Eddy started to wall down the dormant hallway. It wasn’t just the fact that everything was still there but it was like it was abandoned. The wallpaper was tattered and peeling at the edges, cobwebs filled every corner of every room, not to mention the windows were boarded up. But none of this made sense, he knew that a elderly couple had moved in soon after he had moved out. Still he continued through the seemingly abandoned house. The slight murmur of Eddy’s parents drifted with the slight breeze that drifted through the house.
“Eddy.” the whispering voices of his parents repeated this word over and over again. As Eddy walked down the hall the voices gradually got louder. It was coming from the back garden.
“Mum…dad?”
“Yes son it’s us.” the voices uttered in their disturbing way.
For some reason Eddy couldn’t stop his legs, they instinctively went along walking. Eddy reached for the back door. It was unlocked. The eerie breeze became stronger. He saw his parents. They were facing away from him.
“Mum! Dad! B-b-but you d-died.” Whimpered Eddy.
There was no reply. He started to walk closer. They were in arms width. Sweat trickled down Eddy’s neck. Suddenly he felt a clutching feeling around his stomach. He looked down. He was wearing a seat belt, he glanced up to see he was no longer in his old back garden but in the old car on the motorway. Cars zipped passed in the opposite direction. Something was familiar about it. Eddy knew but he could not speak what was wrong? What was happening. The details kept coming, the shopping bags next to him, the bird poo stain on his shirt and the rain which dripped down the window like race car down a racing track. And then in the distance the same lorry with its cherry red paint witch had flaked off at the edges, the slight rust on the license plate. Each horribly accurate detail was there. Eddy tried to scream but nothing came out. The lorry was coming, Eddy shielded himself with his arms the lorry smashed into the car’s side… Eddy woke up, gasping for breath. The pillow was stained with sweat. He looked over to the alarm clock, still trying to get his breath back. It was quarter to three in the morning. He laid back down on his wet pillow and tried to get to sleep but yet he couldn’t. To many disturbing thoughts were whizzing around his head for him to even close his eyes. It was the fifth time he had that dream that week, exactly the same with every grisly detail.
“what’s happening to me? Am I losing it… no I can’t be! Come on Eddy pull yourself together!” he said to himself “It’s going to be okay.” he laid there and stared at the ceiling for the rest of the night, unable to fall to sleep.
Eddy walked down the pavement to Ed’s house. Ed was waiting there sitting on the curb by the gutter.
“Hi Eddy!” called Ed in his usual cheery tune.
“Hey Ed!” replied Eddy “You ready to go?”
“sure am Eddy!”
“Erm… I have a question, why is Double-d in hospital for being punched?”
“It wasn’t the punch it was when he bashed his melon on the curb.”
With that Ed got up and they both started to head to the bus station.
Eddy and Ed walked slowly into Double-D’s room. Double-d looked up and smiled. He had a bandage wrapped tightly round his head.
“Hello guys!” he sounded cheerful but at the same time drowsy and a bit confused.
The three of them started conversation and were chatting away. It must have been at least an hour until Ed stood up and said; “I’m gonna get a drink, do you guys want anything?”
Double-d thought for a while, “I’ll have some mineral water Ed”
Ed’s eyes moved to Eddy. Eddy replied with a shake of his head. Ed walked off closing the door behind him. As soon as he left Eddy turned to Double-d with a mix of panic and terror in his face.
“… Eddy are you okay?” asked Double-D.
“Double-D, there is something I’ve got to talk to you about.”
4
“Hmmm….. Having nightmares about a tragic incident is quite common, I’m sure they will stop eventually.” said Double-D reassuringly.
“Really?” asked Eddy.
“Yes its all perfectly normal.”
“But it seemed so real Double-D…. to real.”
“Look Eddy its going to be all right, you have nothing to worry about.”
“Okay, if you say so.”
“Me and Ed will come over to your house for the night, if you want to.”
Eddy looked down at the floor with angst. Double put his hand on his soldier. Ed burst through the door holding several bottles of cola and massive amounts of gummy worms.
“Can you guys believe they only had 16 bags of gummy worms left!” said Ed in his usual none witty fashion.
“Err… Ed, did you remember my mineral water?”
“……. umm,” Ed rummaged around the several plastic bags holding his bounty of sugary food. “Here it is!” Ed handed him a bottle of cola.
“Err…. Ed…. I said mineral water,” Double-D sighed and smiled at Ed politely…. Oh well.”
“The doctor says that you can leave in a few hours, they just need to check you over.” Said Ed
“That’s nice to hear,” Double-D turned to Eddy, “you two go on back home I’ll be there in couple hours.”
“What ever you say Double-D” Replied Ed.
The two eds left the hospital building and headed to the bus stop. A few rain drops hit Ed’s head, they both looked up, large, menacing clouds lingered above.
“Bugger!” yelled Eddy “Lets hope the bus comes sooo… soooo…. AAAAAHHHH!”
Eddy fell to the floor writhing in pain clutching his head. Images flashed in his mind, grim pictures of death, it gradually got clearer… it was Jimmy! The background was dark, it was night time, the sky was cloudless. Jimmy was walking down one of alleyways in the cul-de-sac. He was following a shadowed figure, Eddy couldn’t figure out who it was. The visions suddenly stopped, Eddy opened his eyes and blinked several times to clear his vision Ed’s worried face was staring down at him.
“Are you okay Eddy?”
Ed helped Eddy up off the damp tarmac. “Ye…yeah… I’m fine.”
“Do you want to see a doctor?”
“No Ed, I’m fine…. I got to go…”
“But Eddy the bus will be here soon.”
Eddy was already walking away, hands in pockets. Rain proceeded to pour down in a flash, Ed retreated back into the bus shelter.
“What’s wrong with Eddy?” Ed pondered to himself. He turned pulled the back of his jacket over his head to avoid an inevitable soaking and ran back into the hospital.
Double-D sat there in his bed eating another of the teeth rotting gifts the worried Ed had given him. Ed ran in. “Ed! What on earth are you doing here? Your soaked to the marrow!”
“Double-D, Eddy is acting really strange, he fell over outside.”
“Good gracious is he ok?”
“I don’t know, he just walked off on me.” Double-D could see that Ed was starting to fret.
“Calm down Ed,” Double-D knew what he should do, “There is probably something you need to know about Eddy”.
Double D proceeded to tell Ed exactly what Eddy had told him.
“We need to help him!”
“Ed there’s little that I can do, there’s clearly something wrong deep down in his sub conscience, we need to inform Dr Freeman, he might know what to do… Ed I’ll be out in a few minutes, you get to Eddies house and I’ll be there later.”
Ed ran to Eddy’s house but there was no one there, the door was unlocked and everything was the same as it was when they left there to visit Double-D.
“Eddy? Dr Freeman?” Ed called in a quite whimper.
There was a long awkward pause, but then eventually the sound of Eddy’s voice came from the living room; “I’m right here Ed, Dr Freeman has gone on a trip to LA to teach some medical students, it’s just me here for the week…..”
Ed followed Eddy’s voice. “Eddy? Are you alright” he asked worryingly.
Eddy was there sat on the floor with ten or so pieces of paper on the floor, they were ripped and messy and covered in fingerprints, the same picture had been drawn on every single sheet, although they were crude and childishly drawn Ed could make out that they all depicted what looked like Jimmy being murdered.
“Eddy….”
Eddy turned and looked at him, “He’s gonna die Ed…. He’s gonna die soon…”
